I apologise for leaving my reply to your PM in an unrelated comment here, but I wasn't to able to respond to your actual message due to privacy settings. I've just copied and pasted my response. Feel free to delete this so it's not cluttering up your entry; I just didn't want to seem like I was ignoring you!

Hello! ^^

Haha, I'm glad to hear you enjoy the scans!

Sadly, I don't think there is a way to scan them without causing at least some damage to book (or if there is, I've yet to figure it out myself. >_<) It's more an art of minimising the damage so that it's as unobtrusive as possible.

The way I do it is to fold the cover and subsequent pages all the way back so it lies flat on the scanner, as close to edge as possible without causing any damage to the spine. It sounds bad (and believe me, there was a lot of wincing the first few times I had to bring myself to do it), but by specifically folding it in the one place, you end up with a single, neat crease about three or four mm in, as opposed to lots of little bends or a broken spine. It depends on the book somewhat, but I've found for most of them you probably wouldn't even notice the crease being there from a casual glance. It would be more obvious if you knew where to look or were specifically inspecting it, of course, but I find it preferential to damaging the spine itself.

(The book will also end up bending a little instead of lying flat afterwards, but that's easy enough to fix by sitting something heavy on top of it for a while, or simply shuffling it to the bottom of a pile of doujinshi.)

I don't know if that's of any help whatsoever, and it's certainly not an ideal method, so I do understand completely if you don't want to harm your books to get the scans! Thank you for considering doing so at all. :)

Hi there, no worries! Maybe I screwed up the settings? Lol
Anyway, thanks for your reply, I have received my doujinshis alr, shipping fee is definitely the horror! But paying more= faster shipping, no doubt about that..

I am still thinking if I am goin to scan, which I will let you know again once I have decided.. Thanks for sharing!

If I scan what kind of resolution should I go with?

No problem. :) It might be set to friends only or something. I'm not sure what LJ's default is. It doesn't help the PM option isn't under the privacy settings where you'd expect it to be. ^^;;

Definitely, the shipping costs are the worst. I always get so excited, thinking I've found a bargain and can afford to buy several doujinshi that I want... and then I remember shipping. v_v Sometimes the shipping has ended up costing me more than the actual books themselves!

To be honest, I've never really experimented with the resolutions that much. ^^;; I usually scan mine at 300 ppi, which gives a fairly large, but not massive, file. I use the large file to remove any shadows, or edit out any blemishes, etc. (I find it easier with more space to work) and then scale the image size down by 50% so the eventual file size isn't too daunting to download. I keep a copy of the full size version as well, in the vague hope that one day a scanlation group might find use for it, haha. But like I say, I haven't really played around with that too much, so if you go ahead with scanning, maybe try a few different ones and see which you like best. :)

(Also, apologies for the late reply. I have a con this weekend and a not-terribly-close-to-finished cosplay, so I've been manically working on that to the exclusion of all else... @_@)

(Replying here again because PM's still won't play nice for me. >_<;; Apologies for that!)

No problem! Real life happens to all of us. X3

Thank you so much!! And Muffy as well. <3 The comm needs more Muffy. (I'm honestly not sure why I've never bought any of her books before. This will have to be rectified in my next order.)

The size isn't really that important, to be honest. Mine always have a huge variation from scan to scan, due to different lengths and the amount of shading and the like, but most are between 8 ~ 13 MB. I've ended up with some fifty page books over 20MB before though! As long as it can fit in an email attachment, it should be fine. ^^

Speaking of which, email is probably the easiest way to send it over. The address for all comm-related stuff is blackskyscans@gmail.com :) You're also welcome to upload it to your own sharing host and simply send over the link for that. Whichever you prefer!

Thank you again for taking the time to do this for the comm!!

Hope all is well on your side!

It's all right! Haha! No worries!

Exactly! We need more Muffy! I saw Muffy's artwork before, mainly from icon/avatar and some random mash up of artworks, only recently then I came to know it belongs to Muffy..

Okay, mainly because I don't want people to end up downloading a super huge files nor a low quality scans.. All right, I will probably send it over in a few days time, oh well, RL sucks..

I will leave the uploading to you, so it's easier for you to maintain! :D

I hope some kind souls will help to translate..

Anyway, since you buy quite a bit of doujinshis, do you know how are doujinshi priced? Any idea? For example, Muffy's "Impulse" is price at ¥8000 which is like USD $99.. Whereas others are like around USD $18 only.. Just wondering.. There is a huge price gap, like HUGE!

All right, done! :D
I have sent to the gmail account via my personal email..
Enjoy and take care! :D

Awesome, thank you so much!! <3 I've received it and I'll get that posted ASAP. The resolution looks fine as it is for general viewing. :) The higher resolution might come in handy if anyone wants to scanlate the book, but... well, sadly, there isn't that much love for FFVII in scanlation groups anymore. orz If anyone does want to translate it, though, I'll point them in your direction.

As for the doujinshi pricing, I'm afraid the best I can offer is an educated guess. ^^;; The general trend I've noticed is that if a book is much more expensive than around ¥1,000, it's likely to be either a large book (e.g. 50+ pages, an anthology, a reprint book with several previous works in it), or it's old/rare and highly collectable. The Muffy books would fall in the latter category.

However, even taking into account, ¥8,000 for Impulse is a bit ridiculous! My suspicion is that that's actually just a typo on Mandarake's site. You're more likely to be looking at ¥1,000-1,500 for that one. The earlier books from 2006/7 and before are rarer and more likely to be between ¥3,000-5,000. (Stress is ¥6,500 on Mandarake, but I think that's overpriced. You can get it for ¥4,500 even elsewhere on the same site!) I've never actually seen the very first book in that series, but that one maybe I could see being around ¥6,000 or higher simply because of how impossible it is to find.

The same thing applies to other circles that are now popular (Nightflight and Kiki, for example), or circles that were very popular at the time, even if they're not running anymore (like Kal2*Dou or Oeste). If it's an old book by a completely unknown or not particularly popular circle, though, it'll probably still be only a couple of hundred yen.

That's probably only a very rough idea, but that's what I've gathered from my observations. ^^;; Sorry that turned somewhat rambling... hopefully something in there will be vaguely useful!

Thank you again for the scan!

That's great! No problem, sharing is caring! :D
Since so many great people had contributed, including yourself, I am glad to join in! :D
Anyway, thank you for your hard work! I see that it's up already! XD Somehow I am very excited.. I had to make it real small so that it does not take up too much bandwidth, but glad that the preview looks great! Yea, sadly we have slowly been left out by scanlation teams, even good ones that you had over at blacksky scans..

I agree with you on your guess, which I also shares them.. Haha.. Don't worry about rambling, I started that first, and I am also looking for people to talk to regarding this topic! I mean people around me don't share this interest as me, they are awesome but this interest is sadly lacking in my circle of friends.. That's where internet comes in! HAHA!

I also find that it is overpriced to a ridiculous point.. I also thought that it's a typo, but looking at Stress' price, makes me stress! LOL! In the end I decided to get a secondhand copy of Impulse at ¥800, which is a good bye no matter if the actual value is ¥8000 or ¥800, the quality is still good! Although there is some bent around the corner which I will not look more than 2 seconds!

Thank you for walking me through my first scanning process, it was a great help! :D Who knows, I might just decides to scan another doujinshi for this comm! :D

Anyway, feel free to ramble with me, i enjoy it a lot! :D It makes me feel that the comm is real, there are still fans like us out there, reaching and working together to continue our love for this fandom so that our fandom does not die or fade away!
